What do penetration test costs mean for your company?

Security is no longer optional in the digital world. Penetration tests, or "pentests", are a key part of a company's cyber security framework. Their cost is therefore an unavoidable item for any company that wants to protect its systems, networks and applications against cyber threats.

Penetration Testing

Penetration tests are systematic attempts to find and exploit vulnerabilities in a system, network or application in order to assess its security. A pentest helps a company identify potential weaknesses before cyber criminals exploit them. The cost of a penetration test usually depends on the size and complexity of the system being tested.

At 360DT, penetration tests start from €3,600 (fixed price after scoping). The price varies with the number of systems and applications to be tested, the complexity of the IT infrastructure and the time required. These costs usually refer to a one-off test; regular tests are recommended. If you want an overview first, you can start at a lower price with our vulnerability scan from €599. What a penetration test with us includes – from scoping to the report with measures – is described on our penetration testing services page.

Penetration test costs as an investment in company security

Even if the price seems high at first, penetration test costs should be seen as a necessary investment in company security: data loss, business interruption, reputational damage and possible legal consequences of a successful cyber attack usually cost a company many times more. A penetration test also gives you an in-depth understanding of your own vulnerabilities and the basis for a predictable approach to reducing risk.

Which factors determine the cost of a penetration test?

The price of a penetration test depends mainly on the effort involved. The most important cost factors are:

  • Number of IP addresses and systems: an external infrastructure test of a few publicly reachable IP addresses is done much faster than testing an internal network with many servers and clients.
  • Number and complexity of applications: a simple website with a contact form requires less effort than a customer portal or a web application with interfaces (APIs) and a payment process.
  • Test depth and perspective: a black-box test without prior knowledge differs in effort from an authenticated gray- or white-box test with several user roles.
  • Retest: a retest after the measures have been implemented confirms that the vulnerabilities found have actually been fixed, and should be planned from the start.

When choosing a provider, do not look at the price alone but also at the provider's quality and experience. After a short scoping you receive a fixed price from us based on your specific requirements.
